I think there might be something to the fructose hypothesis. The idea that certain types of calories do less to decrease appetite than others. Signficant amounts of simple sugars, especially fructose, would typically be available only for a brief time each season, when the fruit was ripe. This signalled binge overeating to fatten up before winters lean months. It seems to me the signal may be associated with rate of change of blood glucose in conjunction with a sweet taste. Non nutritive sweetener in conjunction with highly processed carbs trigger the syndrome. Crappy food makes you hungrier than less readily available sources of carbohydrate calories.
